The Commission on Cancer (CoC)
Of the American College of Surgeons
The Commission on Cancer (CoC), of the American College of Surgeons, is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients. The CoC Approvals Program recognizes hospitals and treatment centers that have cancer programs offering high-quality care through various cancer-related programs. These programs are concerned with cancer prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services, and end-or-life care.
To meet the standards necessary for CoC approval, each cancer program must undergo a rigorous evaluation and performance review. In order to maintain approval, facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years. More information on the Commission on Cancer can be obtained from the American College of Surgeons and the American Cancer Society.

Cancer Liaison Physician Program
An important component of each CoC approved program is their Cancer Liaison Physician. Cancer Liaison Physicians are volunteer physicians responsible for providing the leadership and direction to establish, maintain, and support their facility's cancer program. Liaison physicians work with cancer programs to ensure implementation of Commission on Cancer programs, and establish a close working relationship with the American Cancer Society. Commission on Cancer Approved Programs
Cancer programs that have met standards of care set forth by the Commission on Cancer can be located through the American Cancer Society website. Receiving care at a CoC approved cancer program ensures that patients will receive comprehensive care, with state of the art services and equipment, via a multi-specialty team approach, all close to their home. The American Cancer Hospital Locator is a valuable tool in finding a CoC-approved cancer program.
